At Shift 2025, Commvault shifts closer to primary data with Cloud Unity

At Shift 2025 in New York City, Commvault Systems, Inc., announced the release of Cloud Unity, the next iteration of the Commvault Cloud platform.  Unity is the product of a multi-year plan to transform the company from an on-premises backup software vendor to a SaaS-based data management and data security vendor.  Is this how we should view the Commvault of the next decade, and what does this imply for future product and feature releases?

Commvault Cloud Unity is the latest evolution of a business transformation that started with the release of Metallic in 2019.  As we wrote at the time, Metallic was transformational for the company, as it positioned Commvault to address the needs of modern businesses; namely, the protection of data sitting across private data centres, the public cloud, edge and SaaS (see figure 1).

Metallic has grown from arguably a side project (with clearly bigger intentions) to form the basis of the entirety of Commvault’s solution offerings.  Commvault Cloud was announced in 2023, while Cloud Unity now integrates data security, cyber-resilience and identity resilience features from its most recent acquisition, Satori Cyber.
